NCFCA offers eleven individual speech
events, which are divided into three main categories:
Platform
Speaking - The purpose of the
Platform category is to train the student to research, assemble and communicate
a prepared speech that would appeal to a variety of audiences. The topic of
each speech is chosen by the student.
The types of speeches offered for competition are After Dinner,
Illustrated Oratory, Informative, and Persuasive.
Interpretive Speaking - The purpose of the Interpretive category is to train the student to interpret and creatively explore and develop the intellectual, emotional and artistic embodiment of pre-written pieces of literature in a unique way that would appeal to a variety of audiences. The piece is chosen by the student(s). The types of speeches offered for competition are: Duo Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Open Interpretation, and Thematic Interpretation. Limited Preparation Speaking - The purpose of the Limited Preparation category is to train students to prepare a speech with a previously unknown topic within a time parameter. This is one of the most valuable skills with which your student can apply themselves. The types of Limited Preparation speeches offered for competition are: Apologetics, Extemporaneous Speaking, and Impromptu Speaking. Each of these categories offer distinct opportunities for students to develop excellent communication skills.
- After Dinner Speaking - An After Dinner speech is an original humorous platform speech that informs or attempts to persuade the audience on a noteworthy topic. Click here to view an example of an After Dinner Speech.
- Illustrated Oratory - An Illustrated Oratory is an original platform speech that informs or explains a particular topic with the use of visual aids. Click here to view an example of an Illustrated Oratory Speech.
- Informative Speaking - An Informative speech is an original platform speech on any topic the speaker chooses. The primary goals of the speech are to inform, instruct, and/or inspire. Click here to view an example of an Informative Speech.
- Persuasive Speaking - A Persuasive speech is an original platform speech that attempts to persuade the audience to adopt a particular point of view or course of action. Click here to view an example of a Persuasive Speech.
Interpretive Speaking - The purpose of the Interpretive category is to train the student to interpret and creatively explore and develop the intellectual, emotional and artistic embodiment of pre-written pieces of literature in a unique way that would appeal to a variety of audiences. - Thematic Interpretation - A Thematic Interpretation creatively explores and develops the intellectual, emotional, and artistic embodiment of three or more selections of literature linked by a common theme through personal narrative analysis. - Apologetics is a limited preparation event in which the speaker is given four minutes to prepare a six-minute speech on a topic related to articulating his or her Christian faith. Click here to view an example of an Apologetics Speech.
